Oman Travel Guide 2025: Muscat, Wahiba Sands & Salalah

Wahiba Sands dunes in Oman

I chose Oman after seeing Google Trends for “Oman travel” rise 28% YoY (US, Feb 2025). On the ground, it felt like the UAE’s calmer cousin: fewer crowds, big landscapes, and spotless cities. Here’s the 9-day route I used with real prices and data from the Ministry of Heritage & Tourism (3.6M international visitors in 2023) and Omantel/Ooredoo for SIM costs.

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat Salalah cliffs and Arabian Sea

Visa & entry for Americans

  • eVisa: 10-day single entry is 5 OMR (~$13); 30-day single entry is 20 OMR (~$52) on evisa.rop.gov.om. My approval arrived in 9 hours (site quotes 24–72h).
  • Passport: Valid 6+ months; print the eVisa PDF. Oman Air check-in in JFK asked for it.
  • No arrival card. Immigration at Muscat (MCT) took 11 minutes at 8:40pm on a Tuesday.

Flights & airport arrivals

Hopper’s Jan 2025 tracker shows $980 average roundtrip JFK–MCT with one stop (DOH/IST) booked 6–8 weeks ahead; LAX–MCT averages $1,120.

  • Airport taxi: Official desk to Muttrah 8–10 OMR; I paid 9.2 OMR with meter.
  • Car rental: 12–18 OMR/day for a small sedan; Salalah and desert trips are easier with your own wheels.

Muscat: transport, food, sights

  • Taxis/ride-hailing: OTaxi works; Muttrah Corniche to Qurum is 2.5–3.5 OMR.
  • Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque: Free entry 8–11am (non-prayer days). Dress code enforced; shoulders/ankles covered.
  • Muttrah Souq: Bargain politely; frankincense 1–2 OMR per small bag.
  • Royal Opera House: Tour ticket 3 OMR; check performance nights.
  • Food prices: Shuwa plate 3–4 OMR; fresh juice 0.8–1.5 OMR; 1.5L water 0.15–0.25 OMR.

Wahiba Sands desert basics

  • Getting there: 2h drive from Muscat; last 10–12 km is soft sand—use 4x4 or arrange camp pickup (often included).
  • Camp prices: Mid-range tents with dinner/breakfast 28–45 OMR per person. I paid 34 OMR at a camp near Bidiyah.
  • Activities: Dune bashing 10–15 OMR, camel ride 3–5 OMR. Sunset ridge climb is free and better.

Salalah & khareef season

Salalah’s monsoon (khareef) runs July–September; temps drop to 75–80°F and hills turn green. In 2023 Dhofar welcomed 962k khareef visitors per Omani news agency.

  • Flights MCT–SLL: 30–40 OMR one-way if booked early; 1h45m flight.
  • Haffa Beach & Mughsail: Free; expect misty cliffs mid-khareef.
  • Car rental in Salalah: 14–20 OMR/day; buses are limited.

Costs, cash, and SIM

  • Daily spend I logged (Muscat): 3 OMR transport + 6–8 OMR food + 3 OMR attractions = ~12–14 OMR ($31–$36) excluding hotel.
  • Hotels (Feb 2025 search): Muscat 4-star $80–$140; desert camps $90–$130 equivalent; Salalah khareef mid-range $110–$170.
  • Cash vs card: Cards widely accepted; souqs prefer cash. ATMs available at MCT and malls.
  • SIM/eSIM: Omantel 10 GB for 7 days at 7 OMR; Ooredoo similar. I activated an eSIM via our SIM tool before landing.
  • Plugs: Type G 240V. Use Plug Checker and pack a grounded adapter.

Safety, culture, and dress code

  • Oman ranks high on safety; homicide rate is under 1 per 100k (UNODC). I walked Muttrah Corniche at 10pm without issues.
  • Respect dress norms: shoulders/legs covered in mosques and smaller towns; beachwear only at beaches/hotel pools.
  • No alcohol in most local restaurants; hotel bars have it. DUI laws are strict—don’t risk driving after drinks.

Personal note: every taxi and shop insisted on exact change; keep 0.1 and 0.2 OMR notes/coins handy.

9-day Oman itinerary (tested)

  • Day 2: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Royal Opera House tour, Qurum beach.
  • Day 3: Day trip to Wadi Shab (permit parking 1 OMR, boat 1 OMR each way), return Muscat.
  • Day 4: Drive to Wahiba Sands, desert camp sunset.
