International Plug Types & Voltage Guide 2025

Travel adapter plugged into wall

Plug anxiety is the top tech question I get. This guide maps plug types, voltage, and where you actually need a converter vs just an adapter. Country data is based on IEC standards and gov utility references updated for 2025.

Power strip and plugs Laptop and phone charging

Plug map & voltage quick view

  • North America/Japan: Type A/B, 100–127V, 50/60Hz.
  • EU (most): Type C/F, 220–240V, 50Hz.
  • UK/HK/SG: Type G, 230V, 50Hz.
  • Australia/NZ: Type I, 230V, 50Hz.
  • India: Type C/D/M, 230V, 50Hz.
  • Middle East: Mix of C/G; UAE is mostly G, Saudi uses G/C.

Adapter vs converter 101

  • Adapters change plug shape only. Needed when prongs differ.
  • Converters change voltageβ€”rarely needed because most phones/laptops are dual voltage (100–240V). Check your charger label.
  • Hair dryers/irons: Often single-voltage. Use hotel units or buy local to avoid blown circuits.

Regional cheatsheet

Europe (Schengen + UK)

  • Type C/F for mainland; Type G for UK/IRL. Bring a universal adapter plus one Type G if you visit London.
  • Voltage 230Vβ€”dual-voltage chargers are fine.

Asia

  • Japan/Korea use 100–110V Type A/B; Southeast Asia mixes C/G/A. Thailand accepts A/B/C/F/G in many hotels.
  • Carry a universal adapter; check hotel listing for β€œ220V” before plugging US-only gear.

Middle East

  • UAE/Oman: Type G. Qatar: G. Saudi: G/C mix. 230V.
  • Pack surge protection; voltage spikes are more common per regional utility notices.

Oceania

  • Australia/New Zealand: Type I, 230V. Fiji also Type I. Bring one adapter per traveler.

Africa & LATAM

  • Africa varies: South Africa uses Type M; Morocco Type C; Kenya Type G. Verify with Plug Checker.
  • Latin America often uses Type A/B and 110–127V; Brazil mixes Type N and 127/220Vβ€”check hotel listing.

Safety rules

  • Use surge protection when charging laptops/cameras in 220V regions.
  • Never use a high-wattage US hair dryer on 220V without a converter; better to use hotel dryers.
  • For multi-device charging, use a single high-quality adapter + multiport charger to reduce load on loose wall sockets.
