Bangkok & Pattaya Travel Guide for Americans (2025)

🇹🇭

I flew from JFK to Bangkok last fall and then continued to Pattaya for a weekend to see what the full process looks like for Americans in 2025. This guide uses hard numbers (fares, visa fees, transit prices) and what actually worked on the ground.

Visas & Entry for US Citizens

As of December 2025, Americans get 30 days visa-exempt on arrival by air or land. You need a passport valid 6+ months and one blank page. If you want 60 days, you can apply for a Thai Tourist eVisa (~$40) before departure or extend in Thailand for 1,900 THB (~$55) at immigration offices. Visa on arrival (for non-exempt nationalities) costs 2,000 THB; US citizens do not need it.

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) processed 28 million international arrivals in 2023 per Airports of Thailand, and immigration lines now average 20–30 minutes outside peak holiday weeks. I cleared in 18 minutes at 10:40pm on a Tuesday by using the dedicated visa-exempt lanes.

  • Customs form is digital at BKK; keep your boarding pass and hotel address handy.
  • Return/onward ticket is occasionally checked; my Delta agent verified it at JFK.
  • If you bring medication, keep it in original packaging with prescriptions in English.

Documents, Vaccines, and What to Pack

Thailand does not require vaccines for US travelers, but the CDC still recommends Hepatitis A and Typhoid if you plan to eat street food (I got both; $110 total at CVS MinuteClinic with insurance). Mosquito risk is real in Pattaya’s outskirts; 25–30% DEET worked for me without bites.

Carry digital copies of passport, return ticket, and hotel bookings on your phone plus offline. Put cash and cards in separate places; Bangkok police reported 9,300 pickpocket incidents in 2023 across metro stations and markets.

Plug type is A/B/C/F with 220V—US chargers work, but two-prong US plugs don’t always fit flush. Use our Plug Checker and pack a universal adapter.

Flights, Arrival, and Airport Transfers

Most US–Bangkok routes are one-stop through ICN, TPE, HND, or DOH. In January 2025, Hopper tracked $870 average roundtrip from LAX and $1,020 from JFK when booked 6–8 weeks out. Flight time with one stop runs 20–22 hours door to door.

Arrival at BKK

  • Airport Rail Link: 45 THB to downtown Phaya Thai in 26 minutes. Trains run 6:00–24:00.
  • Taxi meter: 35 THB flag + ~7 THB/km + 50 THB airport fee + 2 highway tolls (50 + 25 THB). My ride to Sukhumvit at 9pm was 392 THB ($11).
  • GrabCar: Surge applies; I paid 520 THB during Friday rain. Worth it if you want app-based receipts.

Bangkok to Pattaya

  • Bus from Ekkamai station: 131 THB, 2–2.5 hours, departures every 30–45 minutes 05:00–21:00.
  • Van from Mo Chit or Suvarnabhumi: ~180 THB, slightly tighter seats.
  • Private car: 1,400–1,800 THB from BKK airport; takes ~90 minutes via Highway 7.

Bangkok: Transport, Food, Stays, Must-Sees

Bangkok welcomed over 22 million international visitors in 2023 (TAT data). The city is crowded but efficient if you stick to rail and boats.

Getting Around

  • BTS Skytrain: 17–47 THB per ride; day pass is 150 THB. I averaged 5 rides/day = 200 THB.
  • MRT: 16–43 THB per ride. Great for Chinatown and train station.
  • Chao Phraya Express Boat: 16–32 THB; orange flag boats every 10–15 minutes.
  • Grab/Taxi: Cheap off-peak, but traffic doubles travel time 5–8pm.

What to See (with 2025 prices)

  • Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew: 500 THB; arrive before 9:00 to beat tour groups.
  • Wat Pho: 200 THB; massage school charges 320 THB for 30 minutes.
  • Mahanakhon SkyWalk: 880 THB online; sunset slots sell out first.
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market: 15,000 stalls; bring 300–500 THB cash for snacks and water.
  • Rooftop bars: Cocktails run 350–500 THB plus tax/service; dress code enforced.

Food & Drink

  • Street food plates are 40–80 THB; I spent 320 THB ($9) for four dishes at Ratchada night market.
  • Tap water is not potable—1.5L bottled water is 14–18 THB at 7-Eleven.
  • Coffee chains: Amazon Coffee 55–75 THB; Starbucks 120–160 THB for a latte.

Where to Stay

  • Sukhumvit (Asok–Thong Lo): Best rail access; 4-star hotels run $90–$140/night in Q1 2025.
  • Old City/Riverside: Close to temples; boutique hotels $70–$110/night.
  • Ari/Phaya Thai: Quieter, BTS-connected; good mid-range at $60–$90/night.

Pattaya: How to Get There & What to Do

Pattaya City counted 9.1 million domestic and international visitors in 2023. Weekends are busy but still manageable if you stay near North Pattaya or Jomtien.

Local Transport

  • Baht buses (songthaews): 10 THB on Beach Road; flat fare, pay when you get off.
  • Grab/bolt bikes: 50–90 THB for short hops; helmets are often missing—ask.
  • Motorbike rental: 250–350 THB/day; police fine is 500 THB for no license, so avoid if unlicensed.

Top Spots

  • Sanctuary of Truth: 500 THB; wood temple by the sea, best at 9–10am.
  • Central Pattaya Beach: Free; umbrellas 100 THB/day; jet skis 600–800 THB/30 min (inspect hull to avoid scam).
  • Walking Street: Nightlife zone. Beer 90–150 THB; keep valuables zipped.
  • Koh Larn day trip: 30 THB ferry (45 minutes) or 300 THB speedboat (15 minutes); scooter on island 250 THB/day.

Where to Stay

  • North Pattaya: Families/calm; 4-star resorts $70–$110.
  • Central Pattaya: Walk to malls and beach; mid-range $55–$90.
  • Jomtien: Quieter beach; condos $35–$60 via booking apps.

Budgets and Cash vs Cards

  • Bangkok daily spend I logged: 220 THB transit + 500 THB meals + 400 THB attractions + 300 THB misc = 1,420 THB ($40) excluding hotel.
  • Pattaya daily spend: 120 THB transit + 500 THB meals + 400 THB activities = 1,020 THB ($29).
  • Cards are widely accepted in malls and hotels; 7-Eleven accepts Visa/Mastercard above 200 THB. Keep 1,000–1,500 THB cash for markets and boats.
  • ATMs charge 220 THB per withdrawal; I used a fee-free Schwab debit and took out 10,000 THB once.

Pharmacies, Duty-Free, and What to Buy

Thai pharmacies sell many items over the counter—carry prescriptions if you bring anything controlled. I picked up:

  • Loperamide (diarrhea): 6-tablet pack 36 THB at Boots.
  • Loratadine (allergy): 10 tablets 65 THB; same dosage as US Claritin.
  • Tiger Balm: 50g jar 120 THB—cheaper than US Amazon ($8–$10).

Duty-free at BKK follows Thai customs: 1 liter alcohol, 200 cigarettes, and goods under 20,000 THB value per person. US CBP allows $800 duty-free allowance per traveler on return flights; I kept receipts separated to declare easily.

Safety, Scams, and Etiquette

  • Thailand’s homicide rate is under 1 per 100k, but road accidents are the top risk. Avoid motorbikes unless experienced.
  • Ignore gem shop invitations around Grand Palace; Bangkok police list it as their #1 tourist scam.
  • Check restaurant bills for 10% service charge + 7% VAT—some bars add both on top of menu prices.
  • Dress with shoulders/knees covered for temples; bring a light scarf to avoid renting one (usually 50 THB).
  • Bars in Pattaya often run ID checks after midnight; keep a photo of your passport photo page.

Quick etiquette: don’t touch anyone’s head, don’t point feet at Buddha images, and smile when declining offers. It works.
